I have to say I was pretty happy with how my presentation at PKN Honolulu went down last night. OK, it’s not like I singlehandedly created 200 converts to the church of brand, but I was pleased that I gave exactly the presentation I wanted to – simple, coherent flow, good energy, with visuals that cohered with super-tightness to my narrative. Yeah!

I’m going to be giving a presentation entitled “What is Brand?” at the upcoming Honolulu Pecha Kucha Night this coming Friday, the 24th. The event will be held at the Honolulu Academy of Arts from 7:30-9:30, and as usual will feature an eclectic bunch of creative types making presentations on everything from architecture to zydeco, all in the unique PKN presenting format (20×20).
I have a new nomination for greatest city on the planet. It’s an obvious one, but christ-almighty, the competition just pales in comparison. Forget about all those most-livable cities lists perennially topped by Vancouver – most overrated city on the planet (disclaimer: I have not been there, call it a “gut feeling”), forget about New York, Geneva, London, Paris. Frisco’s got it all.
Exceptional dining? Check. Mad culture? Check. Living history? Check. Wonderful people? Check. Easy access to nature? Check. Human scale? Check. Bike lanes? Check.
Mind you, this rave review is based on a week’s stay (much of which was across the bay in Oakland)…

Thanks to the tanking economy, we were able to take advantage of plunging room rates and got a deal on rooms at the Palace.

The Oakland Bedrock office.

Truth in advertising at the ferry building morning market.
Also, a few of the wonderful places I had the opportunity to dine at: R&G Lounge, Tomasso’s, the newly opened Midi, and of course, brunch at Marie’s place in Berkeley.

On Monday I will start work for Bedrock Brand Consultants, a small, agile and experienced player in the branding universe. I feel insanely lucky to have stumbled into an opportunity like this here in small-market Hawaii. Bedrock is a tenacious Jack Russel Terrier that can and does run with the big dogs by virtue of its talented team, whom I am looking forward to working with and learning from.
And no, my boss’ name is not Mr. Slate.
